It looks like the Townleyhall undifferentiated passage tomb may have a possible summer solstice sun rise orientation .Has anyone came across a previous mention of this ? T.I.A.

Good Evening George

No, never. But many Irish structures were orientated to solstitial risings. Do you have any azimuth data? Where did your infirmation come from?

Hello Equinox , " no never " is that you don't know of of a previous suggestion of a possible solstice orientation at Townleyhall or you don't beleive it likely ?
As far as I know it hasn't been suggested hence the query . Although there have been suggestions re Townleyhall and Knowth being on a monument to monument alignmnet on the the solstice which is not only unlikely but wrong .The reason I believe it is possible is due to the only plan I have seen , Mitchell's , which gets reproduced in other books is about 60 degrees but is likely to be out by the usual 10-12 degrees e.g. the classic Knowth & Newgrange plans .But if you look on Google Earth short as the passage is it is still possible ,as it is open to the skies , to see it is aligned to something closer to 46-50 degrees which is close to a solstice orientation .Which , of course doesn't mean it was intentional but being a neighbour of a monument that looks like it does have an intentional solstice alignment it might make it that wee bit more salient .

I can't see much from the Google satellite view, assuming this is it.

That is it , I did say the passage was short but enough to see that it is not aligned 60 degrees and is much closer to 50 .

Problem solved , Frank Prendergrast had surveyed the tomb in 2004 as part of his thesis ,and discovered that it was aligned to the solstice . However the info had never appeared in print and was first mentioned at the Drogheda seminar in February ,as noted by Michael http://www.newgrange.com/news50.htm where Frank did speak but wasn't mentioned in that listing .
