At the Caerleon Amphitheatre
Come and join us for a magical weekend as Caerleon comes alive to tales of Arthur in this spectacular show.
According to legend Caerleon was a court of King Arthur. Who was Arthur? Did he exist? Was he a real 6th Century warlord or a figment of a medieval author's mind?
We shall probably never know the answer to these questions, but Arthur has captured the imagination of a nation for over 1,000 years. The King that defended Britain in its hour of need…and lies in waiting to do so again.
Come and enjoy an action-packed day out for all the family in a unique setting – the most complete amphitheatre in Britain.
Watch Britannia, the Arthurian Society, in the Amphitheatre and wander around the Living History encampments.
Listen to Dr Juliette Wood talk on 'The Truth About King Arthur'. Meet Decimus the Dragon and marvel at the dragon puppets of Alchemy and their stories.
Take a tour of Roman Caerleon with an Archaeologist, shop at the craft stalls and let the children march in the Amphitheatre!
Arthur and Caerleon
There are mentions of the name ‘Arthur' as a war lord in some books dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries, but it is really with Geoffrey of Monmouth's book, ‘History of the Kings of Britain' around 1135 that the story of ‘King Arthur' starts.
In his book Geoffrey says that Arthur held court and was crowned at Caerleon and talks of him and Guinevere, who eventually became a nun at Caerleon.
After Geoffrey, many other authors wrote about King Arthur, adding their own ideas to the stories in which there are noble knights, damsels in distress and magical quests!
Arthur, Merlin, Camelot, the Holy Grail and all the other cast of characters and elements of the story have lost none of their fascination for modern audiences. Long live the King!
