Hello everyone - i would be very grateful if anyone can help me with the following:
I have posted 2 short films about the recent works at Silbury on Youtube (produced for English Heritage by Chris Corden Productions).
The 1st film is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxkXdK2hcs4
and the 2nd film is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVxKI0bKdk4
This second film is currently available on the EH website Silbury pages.
I am trying to find out if the first film ever appeared on the EH website during the course of the 2007 Silbury conservation work (May/June) and if it did, then what evidence could be cited to prove this.
I have posted a similar request on the tma forum and have had several helpful replies but, as yet, no definitive answer.
thanks for your time in reading this
best regards

Hi Fachtna
I alerted Dennis Price to your TMA article as he's always fascinated by anything to do with Silbury Hill, and he has also put up a link to it on Eternal Idol.

Hello fachtna, and welcome to the better megalithic site
I remember there was a video on the EH web site, and looking on our Silbury page
http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=145
I posted a link on Sunday 10th June 2007 to a page that's no longer there
Film clip of the repair of Silbury Hill, the first of a series:
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.17512
That is good evidence in itself but we can put this link into Internet Archive to see what that page was:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.17512
Which shows when it stored that page
http://web.archive.org/web/20070616090455/http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.17512
"Short Films : Silbury Hill : Free sites unlocked"
The answer is yes and the above is evidence.
You're welcome to quote/cite this
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy, mnay thanks for the welcome and for following this up.
I have chased down the chain of addresses you have given but get stuck at the end - does the actual film ever download?
The key question for me in this (and indeed for my family) is whether film 1 ever appeared on the EH website as well as (and before) film 2?
I imagine that resolving this will need some degree of further identification even if its only the length of the film. This seems to be the difficult bit.
Best wishes
fachtna
Also thanks Angi for passing this topic on.

The film won't have been archived so you can't download it now but I think you have sufficient evidence that it was there at the time.

Isn't it well known from the reports and TV programme that work did take place within the 1849/1968/1969 tunnels? Why does it matter what was in that first film? Perhaps that part was added in one of the later films?
I don' t get it, are you implying some sort of conspiracy theory?

If it helps, the original flash video first posted was called (somewhat unhelpfully)
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/upload/swf/silbury_hill.swf
It's still in the archive if you can get it to download:
http://web.archive.org/web/20071006100118/http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/upload/swf/silbury_hill.swf
The British Library also archives a number of important web sites (including ours). Here is their archive:

Hi Andy - many thanks again for all your assistance with this.
Whilst I can't unfortunately get the video/film to download from them it is very helpful indeed to have the exact url's.
I should point out that I am seeking to clarify the situation with respect to these 2 films and their appearance (or not) on EH website for reasons that are personal and professional - rather than directly related to the archaeology and history of Silbury.
I hope that people will not feel that this has been an inappropriate use of this forum, if so then I apololgise now.
best regards

Hello
I would just like to say that my query about the films has now been resolved.
After a request under the Freedom Of Information Act English Heritage has discovered that 'both versions of the first Silbury film [ie the 2 videos I posted on youtube] were on the EH website at different times, and that the longer version of the first film [which I termed video 1] was replaced by a shorter edited version [video 2].
The first version of the first film presented the backgound to the 2007 fieldwork and showed work taking place inside the re-opened Atkinson tunnel in May/June 2007, including the excavation of the buried ditch and me talking about the work to camera.
This was replaced by a shorter version which only presented the background to the 2007 fieldwork.
This shorter version was accompanied on the EH website by another film - 'A walk through the tunnel'. This begins with the excavation of the buried ditch being discussed by Mr Jim Leary, who is described in the film as the 'Fieldwork Director of the project for English Heritage'.
Many thanks to all who have assisted with this.

Answering my own question from last year, it is now clear the reason for Fachtma's 'personal and professional' interest in these videos and why he had been cut out:
