Burning a small end of one stone does not justify it as an experiment into archaeological practices in the middle ages.
The writings of William Stukeley talked about stones that had been totaly smashed up and the pits turfed for ploughing.
If the archaeologists' want to discover what they are really finding in the burning pits then the experiment should have been carried through to the end.
Personaly I would have used a sarcen far away from the World Heritage Site of Piggledean sarcen flow to conduct it.

Among all the people I've talked to, there's been just one view - it was wantonly destructive.

I totally agree with you in all things, Jez, and I think it is criminal the way some people get their friends and relations ( I sound like Rabbit!!) to post on their threads, just like it was real peopl. Personally I think... (cont p94)

Dear Fibonacci
Thanks for your support.
I'm not sure I understand the Criminal Rabbits thing you mentioned?
And who started the phrase Megarak? I have been asked several times and don't want to quote a wrong source.

I`ve just noticed that over on the Time Team forum

http://community.channel4.com/6/ubb.x?q=Y&a=tpc&s=162603557&f=8896096411&m=2086066871&p=1

they seem to think that burning the stone was a good idea, and we are all New Age Barm-Pots!

OK, Baz - It's pretty obvious who I post as, but what's your moniker?

Here`s a clue, especially for you, Jez.

"I see a small group of people,......."

Now, where`s that club?

I presume that Barm Pot is an amalgam of barmy and potty.

Well, I've been through the threads, and I must be a very dense barmpot

better stone than wood

well apart from his annoyinhg voice i do think this is a good program and a
refreshing brake whilst waiting for time team.

But what seems to be overlooked is that in the 1700's tha land owner of
avebury decided to stand the stones back up and they are chocked and are set
in concrete,

so burning of the end of a stone could be nothing if he hadnt have put them up
in the right places and facing the correct direction.

My source by the way is a decendant of the farmer who kept a diary.
END.

Yeah right! Grenola! (Equal part Fruit, Nuts & Flakes!)

Barm is a word meaning leaven or yeast - maybe a barm pot bubbled and hissed to little purpose...

Jezreell - hissing and bubbling with the best of them.
