Does anyone know/have a theory on these holes (if that's what they are) at the east of the Butterdon Hill Cairns?:

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.4127286025,-3.8943518103(Butterdon+Hill+Cairns)&ie=UTF8&ll=50.413293,-3.89092&spn=0.001614,0.004801&z=18

and again here to the west of them

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.4127286025,-3.8943518103(Butterdon+Hill+Cairns)&ie=UTF8&ll=50.414459,-3.896804&spn=0.001613,0.004801&z=18

There also seems to be an alignment just north of these holes (roughly E-W). Are they megalithic?

I have also noticed what look like to be hut circles but don't know about this

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.4127286025,-3.8943518103(Butterdon+Hill+Cairns)&ie=UTF8&ll=50.417901,-3.909108&spn=0.000807,0.002401&z=19

Can anyone set me straight on any of these things?

Sorry, I dont know what it is you have found here, but I will make a couple of guesses.

Firstly, the "holes" pattern. This could be remains of some very old mining activity, which was prevalent on Dartmoor from thousands of years ago. The granite moor is fairly rich in minerals, eg tin, copper, lead etc, and the early forms of mining these minerals basically meant pits were dug along where the seams came to the surface. For some really spectacular old pit mining marks, check out near the Hurlers on Bodmin moor
http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.515501578438,-4.4584857522612(The+Hurlers)&ie=UTF8&ll=50.517315,-4.457595&spn=0.004073,0.012231&z=17

Secondly, I can only make a wild guess at. The pattern is very straight and regular, and I wonder whether there was ever a fence across the moor ? I dont know of one, but maybe there once was. Or maybe a water pipeline, or something to do with the reservoir nearby?

Your third site is indeed hut circles, you have found Harford settlement http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=23440

Thanks Captain, appreciate you taking the time to let me in on your thoughts.

The east holes I thought maybe bomb holes from WW2 (just by the pattern of them), the west ones I thought might not be holes at all but maybe small barrows/henges.

The alignment is a guess by me (as most things I ask megalithically), when I was searching TMP (very hard in the last few minutes of the street view competition) I came across the Heath Stone site but could not find the standing stone, what I did find is what seems to be 2 stone row alignments:

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.6386954694,-3.88079642071(The+Heath+Stone)&ie=UTF8&layer=c&cbll=50.638583,-3.880746&panoid=5ftg9p883-6BxJ8dHybJ1g&cbp=12,343.81,,0,27.32&source=embed&ll=50.651528,-3.880835&spn=0,0.076818&z=14

http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&q=50.6386954694,-3.88079642071(The+Heath+Stone)&ie=UTF8&layer=c&cbll=50.639303,-3.879331&panoid=pITFfR95NuSk-yl0Y_BAAQ&cbp=12,58.02,,0,17.67&source=embed&ll=50.639228,-3.879547&spn=0,0.076818&z=14

both of these views will show you the rest of the row cut in half by the road if you turn 180. They also seem the NE-SWish type of thing but am guessing you may be right and they're just old fences (if so - bummer!).

I'ved checked out Harford on TMP but there isn't that much bar pics, I'll see what the net has to say. Have looked at the Hurlers site and can definitely see your point (yours actually looks more like bomb strafing patterns than mine - but I reckon the huns couldn't fly that straight anyway).

Thanks again Captain and all the best to you.

PS Did you hear about the dog that had her pups by the side of the road?
She got a ticket for littering.

See ya.

What you have got there are ancient settlement/field boundaries. Much of Dartmoor (and indeed other southwestern upland areas) is covered with them.

And I believe you have got the Heath Stone found in the first view, rotated and zoomed, underneath the dark horse on the skyline.

Just goes to show what you can find when you know what your looking for (and not going by those misleading red inverted drops that seem to be at least 200yrds from what you are looking for (well sometimes)). You claim that one Captain.

Thanks again for your time (and eagle eye).

you have to be very careful with those red markers - they are only accurate when the site is given an accuracy rating of 5 - and then that is not always the case, as sometimes there may be typos, and sometimes people think they are giving a position more accurate than they really are.
