I've just bought myself a reconditioned 4MP Olympus C-4000 digital camera for £115 + shipping from an ebay trader in the US. Took just over a week to arrive, no VAT, looks and works like new. What a bargain. You've got to check out the sellers' ratings but this one's highly recommended. Have a look
Cheers,
Andy

Need some advise on digital cameras, please. I have a nice little digital Kyocera compact which is fine, but batteries go flat at the drop of a hat especially in cold weather and useless if you are on a camping trip and unable to recharge. I take a spare and keep the camera close to my body heat, but its still pretty feeble. Anyone have similar problems?
I have a non digital Nikon SLR with fantastic lenses - much better than that on the digital compact. Now I'm told that there is a new digital Nikon SLR that accepts all my Nikon lenses. So that should give me SLR quality with digital convenience - snag is that it costs £1000!!! Can anyone suggest a better option?

How powerful are your rechargables? See another of my recent buys for some with a lot of storage capacity: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3817365513 These were sent from Australia - true global commerce!
I think digital SLRs will always be expensive as 1) they are never going to go mainstream due to the large size and 2) they have complex optics, which aren't going to tumble in value like the CCD sensors do.
What's the benefit of SLR anyhow when you can see and check the results on a display? You can get a good range of interchangable lenses for the Olympus 3000/4000/5000 series. This series run on 4 AA batts so I think they last longer than the smaller 2 battery models.
The main thing I keep my film camera for is the zoom-ability, but if you 'zoom' by cropping the image I can get very good zoom on the digital. You'll always want the feel of film for some shots?
Here's a large zoom on the digital:

The film version was more grainy so I used this one.
Cheers,
Andy

That Kodak is a good price for that spec of camera, checked out on my favourite digicam review site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Re the Kodak....PC World say that the catalogue was wrongly printed...the prices incorrect! Making more inquiries.

I just got a Minolta Z2 for £220. it is a great budget buy - 10x optical zoom, SLR in terms of the eyepiece showing the image taken and all function displays. The batteries last for quite a while (compared to my Dimage 7) and at 4Mp I think you'd be hard pushed to beat this one.

I thought that Kodak sounded a bit too good to be true, hard luck.
You can get away with a 2MP camera for posting on the web so for those on a budget, Amazon.co.uk have a very good deal on the Olympus C-220 ZOOM Camedia £79.99 including p&p. A fundamentally decent camera, none of your rubbish here. Support the Portal and order via this link.

To Thorgrim
There is a FUJI SLR digital camera body available that takes Nikon lenses (~£900-1000)
It is virtually identical to the Nikon FD (£1800).
The Camera shop (name?) in Hitchin town Centre (near the Church) had one on display recently.
Regards .... bec

Thanks Bec I'll have a look see. I just can't manage with compacts as I take a lot of botanical close ups and need to be free of paralax error. Can't see a blessed thing on the camera screen when the sunshines on it! Compacts-they'll never catch on

Interesting one, that's a reason I'd not considered for needing a digital SLR. Any of these close-ups good for a photo library?

Probably not too relevant to us lot but one of the other problems of digital media is the shelf life of recordable CD/DVD's - slides and negaitves if stored correctly have a shelf life much much longer than most recordable CD's....
(One problem I frequently find working with both film and digital is storage space on my PC - each slide/negative I scan occupies 155MB stored in RAW format -- so not much change out of a DVD for a typical roll of 35mm film... so having the film is handy as I can junk the shots on the PC I don't want to keep)
