Recently I came across some of the most mysterious and intriguing artifacts I ever saw, the simply called Golden Hats.
A search on the portal didn't give any results, and so I would like to bring this to attention.
There is some english information about the hats on the internet, and because my english is not that good, just let me post some of the illustrations / pictures and a number of links...

Golden hats (or Gold hats) (German: Goldhüte, singular: Goldhut) are a very specific and rare type of archaeological artefact from Bronze Age Central Europe. So far, four such objects ("cone-shaped gold hats of the Schifferstadt type") are known. The objects are made of thin sheet gold and were attached externally to long conical and brimmed headdresses which were probably made of some organic material and served to stabilise the external gold leaf. The following Golden Hats are known at present:
* Golden Hat of Schifferstadt, found in 1835 at Schifferstadt near Speyer, circa 1,400-1,300 BC.
* Avanton Gold Cone, incomplete, found at Avanton near Poitiers in 1844, circa 1,000-900 BC.
* Golden Cone of Ezelsdorf-Buch, found near Ezelsdorf near Nuremberg in 1953, circa 1,000-900 BC; the tallest known specimen at circa 90 cm.
* Berlin Gold Hat, found probably in Swabia or Switzerland, circa 1,000-800 BC; acquired by the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Berlin, in 1996.

Hi Holger,
They have cropped up from time to time in discussions in the Mysteries section although I'm blowed if I can remember in which threads. I was sure I'd started one about favourite artifacts at some time in the dim and distant past, and nominated the golden cones as one of mine, but I can't find it, sorry.
As they are so unusual and of course reminiscent of witches pointy hats as your cartoon demonstrates, there is of course much speculation that they have alleged astronomical, numerological and generally mystical, magical, shamanistic type connections. That often centres around the number of bands and the number of circles being significant to a particular set of mathematical rules that are relevant to both the astronomical and geomantic principles.
Whatever they were for, their presence and craftsmanship are absolutely stunning.

The only contemporary artefact in the UK that's large and consists of beaten gold as far as I know is the Mold Cape Whether its designs add up to the same numerical conclusions as the hats, I've no idea.
It would also be interesting to know what happened to the similar cones, described as vases, dug from peat in Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ireland being Ireland, they may well still be found.

I love thse. I must admit to sneaking one into my novel, STONE LORD, even though trhey've not be found in the UK 9i also put in a version of the Mold Cape.) I had not idea that there had been 'vases' found in Ireland that were similar...that raises some intriguing possibilities.

One of the Museum Mysteries programs included these recently and demonstrated how they show sun/moon phases.
