Work has begun in Northumberland on a massive earth sculpture of a naked, reclining woman.

Its creator, landscape architect Charles Jenks, has been forced to deny it is offensive to women - claiming it will be an iconic celebration of the human form.

Crews using bulldozers and excavators have started work on the spectacular, 440-yard-long sculpture using 1.5m tonnes of soil and clay dug from an opencast mine near Cramlington.

Mr Jencks, who was commissioned to design the work, said he hopes it will become an icon for the region and form part of a 'destination art' route for UK tourists.

Nestling among man-made lakes at Blagdon Estate, it will be the centrepiece of a landform park expected to open to the public in 2013.

Responding to suggestions that the Northumberlandia figure is demeaning to women and could be offensive to some, Mr Jencks said he believes people will soon be won over by it.

This looks wonderful, to me she looks like an earth/nature goddess, shame it's not being created on a slope/hillside though in my opinion.

I wonder if Silbury Hill started like this, then they ran out of steam?

This presentation looks a little more naturalistic than previous ones. I think it's a lot more innovative than just a public amenity area.

Latest info, it's now built, but not without controversy. I wonder if, in his day, the Cerne Abbas Giant faced similar local objections?

This huge 1,300ft naked woman made out of slag heaps has got her neighbours in Northumberland talking, dividing opinion between the lovers and the haters.
The reclining female figure formed out of grassy mounds a quarter of a mile long and weighing an estimated 1.5million tons has been moulded from a slag heap and laid on her back on the Blagdon Estate, near Cramlington.
Officially, she was named 'Northumberlandia' by creators the Banks Mining Group, Viscount Matthew Ridley and landscape architect Charles Jencks.
But critics of the curvy creation, which cost £3million to build and is the world's largest human landform, have been less than complimentary - instead referring to her as the 'fat slag'.

Could someone with a bored moment work out the grid ref and possibly do a site page as well. (Under 'Join in - Add a new site'.) I think this deserves a listing as a modern site under 'Modern Stone Circle / Monolith' even though it's an earthen monument due to the similarity to a ridge of barrows and/or the reclining goddess folklore sites.
