I would like to register The Megalithic Portal to have its own event at the Festival of British Archaeology (between Saturday 17 July to Sunday 1 August 2010)

However I'm not sure what sort of event this could be. Any ideas? Somewhere in the southern half of the UK that I could get to and organise an event? Or perhaps we could have several events in different parts of the country?

One idea I had was a 'blitz' on 'green' sites to turn them 'red' with photos. Can you find a good location for this where we have lots of sites but few photos?

Andy,

if you put 'brecon' in the search box, you'll definitely see a likely candidate for a central point in a sea of green! The time sits nicely between the Hay Festival and the Brecon Jazz one, and there are lots of opportunities for accommodation of all types.

I suspect even the MOD might make special access arrangements for the nearby Range featuring in Thingy's recent photos? They are likely to be happy to show their support for the Festival.

Booking a glider trip from nearby Talgarth over the Beacons as a prize might be a good attraction perhaps?

Anyway, just one to through into the pot! I wonder if the guys at COFLEIN might want to participate - MP certainly gives their site some visitors..

A Portal summer outing, sounds good. Lampeter University have put on events for this fortnight in the past. May be worth checking them out. And, of couse, Angie will be able to give minefield clearing exhibitions too.

Mmm. lots of hillforts, that would keep you fit. It does sound like a promising area. I know it's the kind of thing we all do spontaneously on our own but it would be good to have an 'official' event that we could get some publicity for from the CBA.

Do you think there'd be enough of you around South Wales to run it between you as I'd quite like to organise something in my neck of the woods. (mind you I could do that on one of the other weekends in those dates)

Andy,
I've had a look on the festival website, and theres nothing in the way of an itinerary yet. Did you want something to tie in with the official going's on,or something a bit less formal.

I would like to register an event (or two) in their itinerary to raise our profile a bit. To do that I have to send a form back to them with the details of the event by 19 March 2010.

So yes it would be good if we could come up with an official event for this.
Cheers

Andy
I could possibly help but can't guarantee dates until about a month before (I've booked up all my year's hols around our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and only get my work-rota about 5wks in advance).

Pab
Cerrig E-mailed me about this weekend but sorry, can't make it due to work.

As a possibility, how about 7 stone circles in one walk, taking in a few other things? At a guess about 12miles, but I'll do the logistics and come back.
The circles in question (for anyone interested) - Cerrig Duon - Rhyd Wen Fach - Sychnant (aka Bannau Sir Gaer) - Nant Tarw (x2) - Mynydd Bach Trecastle (x2) (aka Y Pigwn). It could involve dropping off and picking up or taxis and pubs.

Any thoughts?

12 miles! I'll need an ambulance to take me to the pub after that.

sem & cerrig....

I looked at the route taking in 7 circles....wondered if it would be more for the 'already converted' rather than attracting new people & families? I guess it depends what focus you had in mind Andy?

I'm not sure I'd have time this year to sort out logistics of getting people to or from walks - I was thinking more of having a central point where people could pick up lists of 'green' sites we'd prepared for them to find and post photos on the Portal? Perhaps arrange for a willing pub that does meals to be the central venue? Bit of a treasure hunt really...

That way, the worst that can happen is for us to have lots of lists left over or run out too quickly! Hopefully cerrig and I will be able to meet up at a campsite in Brecon this weekend and see what ideas there are. I see that the local archaeology trust have done something in previous years - they may have something in mind too. Will report back after weekend.....and other thoughts elsewhere?

Pab,
There are lots of sites close to your campsite at Talybont; Wells and old churches, Hillforts, Standing stones and Cairns etc, so plenty of candidates with a wide variety of difficulty ratings. Something for everyone really, from right next to a road to a trek into the mountains.
I'm tempted by Sem's idea, but it would be because I like the hills, the circles themselves are already quite well served on the Portal. So like you say it depends on the theme of the event as to where it's focussed.
Pubs seem to be an area of agreement though, maybe we can find one with prehistoric prices as a base.

I missed this bit Sem, Congratulations to you both. But I've got to wonder; 25 years, with you, that Halo you sneak out onto the hills, it has to belong to your missus surely. She really must be a Saint.

I've been out a few times on the Beacons and other places with Caroline and Sem and you are quite right Cerrig... she certainly has 'the patience of a Saint'... He's so lucky to have her support, considering she isn't really 'into' stones. Great girl... good Welsh blood!
and a very happy wedding anniversary to you both, Sem!!
(The daffodil and the rose, eh, Sem?).. now, was York white or red...?!

This is what I had in mind, not an organised walk as you say. Can you think of a suitable pub that we could meet at?

For the purposes of the printed listing we need to set a date by the end of this week so are there any weekends any of you definitely can't do between Saturday 17 July to Sunday 1 August 2010 and that will narrow things down.

I am hoping to hear from the Clwyd & Powys Archaeology Trust tomorrow (Monday) what their plans are following their meeting on Thursday, and aimed to check with cerrig then to see if he'd had any joy from the MOD on access to Eppynt Range. If the Eppynt Range is a goer, I think the Griffin Inn on the back road from Brecon to Builth Wells might be a good meeting point. I am seeing someone who lives that way tomorrow to see if any alternatives (and discounts!)

I know it's getting a bit tight, and realistically saw Tuesday as decision day for this year?

No reply from MOD about access to Ynis Hir stone circle yet, but a look on their website would seem to suggest that live firing is suspended for one weekend a month, and a motor rally is usually held on the range during this suspension. No dates for this year on the website but last year saw a rally on August Bank holiday weekend, so maybe this is a yearly event, and if so it would fit nicely with the festival.
If not there are lots and lots of other sites to visit locally.

Called into Sennybridge camp today re. access to Ynis Hir stone circle. Everyone very helpful, but CO was unavailable. I will ring him tomorrow, but I got the impression that a new broom has swept through the access allowances, so it doesn't look too hopeful. But I havn't mentioned our secret weapon( Angie) yet, I've kept that one in reserve.

If that's a declaration of war Cerrig I'm with you - those bas**rds still owe me some back-pay ("coward" indeed)! When we get down to it, bagsy I direct operations from a high vantage point some distance away...
