Brigantia sent this information on the following event in Oxford, on March 6th, 2010

"Do We Know our Own Minds?"

It's a series of lectures organized by the Scientific & Medical Network and I know there'll be others here who'll find this series of talks of interest:

An enquiry into the nature of consciousness from differing viewpoints
6 March 2010 9.30a - 6 March 2010

Venue: The Friends’ Meeting House, 43 St. Giles, Oxford

Is mind, consciousness, the by-product of complex interactions in the brain? If so, how does physical matter develop the property of subjective awareness? Or is mind actually a deeply integrated property of the universe – William Wordsworth’s “something far more deeply interfused”?

Our speakers will launch our inquiry into the problem. The nature of mind is often discussed in specialist, academic conferences and papers (and no one has yet come up with a definitive answer), but there have been surprisingly few open, public discussions on this crucial topic, so please feel free to come and use the time scheduled in this event to enter into discussion with speakers and other audience members (or simply listen if you prefer)!

It is hoped that it will be possible to continue debating online after the event, but if so this will be announced on the day.

Speakers:
Dr. SERENA RONEY-DOUGAL, parapsychologist and author of the bestselling Where Science and Magic Meet.

RITA CARTER, well-known science and medical writer, journalist and author of several books, including Mapping the Mind; Consciousness; The Brain Book.

PAUL DEVEREUX, managing editor of Time & Mind – the Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture; co-editor of Mind Before Matter.

The programme will be scheduled so that audience members can enter into discussion with the speakers and others, so feel free to come ready to debate!

Students (with student ID) – £12; Scientific & Medical Network members – £20; all others – £24. Spaces limited, so early booking advised.

Thanks - and seeing how much the Scientific & Medical Network charge for membership makes the Portal look like an absolute bargain.
