How about asking peoples opinions about the original intentions of the megalith builders . Not so much what they have read or been told, but what they would like to believe.

I'm sure we can think of a few options. How about Spaceship landing points, windmills, the keys or entrance to the underworld, controls to the space time energy system, ancient burial places, Fairy houses, ceremonial places, garden follies, fertility symbols, petrified dancing girls, marker stones, stones thrown by the devil, Monsters lairs, energy transformers. There must be some others I haven't thought of at this moment. I am sure Kev will have a few ideas !

Which sorts of megaliths though, I think it's a safe bet they didn't all have the same purpose. Better start with stone circles I guess

OK, that's ready. We've done this question for 'Stonehenge' and 'single standing stones' so it will be interesting to compare the results

Andy,
not a Poll but it would be really useful if you could ask people to list what type of stone is found at each site you list here and where its local source is to be found.
This is sadly lacking from other internet sites about megaliths and potentially very useful to researchers who wish to trace the source of the stones from each site.
Just a thought...

Good idea Pete. That should be doable. I wonder how to collect this, preferably a selection box listing all the possible different types of rock? (which we would have to work out) That would in time let us create maps and stats by type of rock.
I'm also thinking about the best way to add a date field for each site. This would include a 'date spread' or uncertainty so it could be as broad as 'Bronze Age' or to a precise date. Once we had a good few of these we could start creating possible timelines.
There is lots more to do, thanks.

Andy,
personally I can't tell the difference between one type of stone and another so it would be useful if you created a page with photos of examples of the different types of stone that circles are made with.
Maybe Brian Johns could help with this being a geologist and an expert on Bluestone types?
Galaxyzoo has a feature for people to catalog astronomical types, Galaxies, nebula etc maybe something similar here would allow people to go through sites when they have the time to list the stone types.
cheers,
Pete
