A History of the World is a partnership between the BBC and the British Museum that focuses on world history, involving collaborations between teams across the BBC, and schools, museums and audiences across the UK. The project focuses on the things we have made, from flint to mobile phone.

At the heart of the project is the BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 objects. 100 programmes, written and narrated by Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, and focusing on 100 objects from the British Museum’s collection. The programmes will travel through two million years from the earliest object in the collection to retell the history of humanity through the objects we have made. Each week will be tied to a particular theme, such as 'after the ice age' or 'the beginning of science and literature', and the programmes will broadcast in three blocks, in January, May and August.

Deep zoom imagery of all objects on the site lets you see the detail up close while listening to the programme. You can also watch short videos of many of the objects and download podcasts of each programme as it is broadcast.

The first 5 programmes are available Here
1. Mummy of Hornedjitef
2. Olduvai Stone Chopping Tool
3. Olduvai Handaxe
4. Swimming Reindeer
5. Clovis Spear Point

Thanks - I caught the last half of that introductory programme. Perhaps I'm getting old but I found the relentlessly enthusiastic attempts to get 'the general public' involved and interested a bit tiresome.

The very wise selection by David Attenborough of the integrated circuit as the final object was of course correct.

Also of interest, from a simpler age:

BBC Archive programmes of Chronicle, including the classic 1967 Silbury dig programme and one on Alexander Thom from 1970. I'm not old enough to have seen these!
