Does anyone know what the little grotto/seat thing is on the Portsmouth Rd...just north of Sandown??
I've driven past several times...but anyone who knows the area will know it's nigh on impossible to park and investigate.

From Pevsner's "The Buildings of England"........."Opposite the Travellers Rest, a pretty grotto-like "Sedilia", erected by Henry Pelham about 1730-40."

Pelham was the younger brother of the Duke of Newcastle and got William Kent to re-design Esher Place (his country house) in the Rococo-Gothic style.

Albert, I know the feature well but I've never stopped to look at it either! Fascinating info Jim, thanks.

Managed to find a pic I'd taken last year(was able to due to a traffic hold-up)..it doesn't qualify for Andy's album due to age(at least I don't think so)...so here it is for you...

Thanks. I'd love to include such things but I don't think we could cope with the volume of submissions we'd get of more modern monuments.
