"a scenario just pops up......in my head"

Ah well, that I can at least understand. There is nothing you can transmit to the rest of us that will "help" us to do the same. Somehow, I don't think anything will just pop into my head no matter how open minded, willing or keen I am

How very strange to ask questions about...and dismiss possibilities for cart-ruts then, especially if you start with the notion that "nobody knows"..it is an assumption that you will never get any satisfying answers...so why perpetuate the debate?
It looks very much like you have only started this to create dissention instead of seeking enlightenment.
Am I right??

They are ruts made by carts. (I didn't realise you were talking about something else, sorry).

It could be a natural formation, it's sedimentary limestone in Malta - it could be a frozen ripple in the seabed.

David, you'll only be told your explanation is too naive because the tracks are halfway up a cliffside or some such tripe...it seems we don't have any idea why fossilised sea creatures, pebbles sand deposits are found up what are now cliffs...because only one person knows!!!

When all the earth was very soft...prototypes of the plough(invented approx. 1500 BC)were being tried out and left their marks...much the same as the stoneage footprints in the sands of the Mersey...hence the differing depths and routes.

This sounds reasonable! Something like serious, archeological theory.... I have to think about....

I 'll add it to the list of my favorite major archaeological theory:
1) Barrows represent megalithic vision of idea of cosmic mountain of universe...
2) Rock art is an effect of shamanic narcotic visions....
3) Cup marks are megalithic woman's intime calendars....
4) Our ancestors appointed ley lines with ropes and pegs ...

5) Alignements were the processions routes...
6)All Albert's theories...

The blade of a plough has to be angled in order to lift and turn the soil.

So there must have been a lot of trial and error to get it right before selling the invention to the agrarian newcomers
