I have just improved the on-page Yahoo maps to get rid of the horrid orange place tag things, replacing them with graphical icons of site types. I have also increased the 'nearest site' display on the map to 100 sites around where you currently are.
I will shortly add the red/green/grey icons as used on original megalith map and the Google Earth data.
Have a go with these and let me know how they look to you.
Thanks
Andy

Increasing display of nearby sites is certainly very helpful. And the icons look much better than this orange tags. Thanks! Martin

They look a bit dodgy on Internet Explorer, a bit more fiddling is needed

Much better Andy - well done! I had stopped using the on-page map some time ago in favour of the click-on ones as the orange things not only got in the way, it was often difficult to remember which I had already clicked on, especially when there were a few fairly close together.
2 thoughts on new version....firstly, even when zoomed in using IE, the icons are pretty small - it's difficult to see immediately which are hillforts for example, and which are stone circles. Any chance that icons can grow with the zoom so that they aren't too obscuring when zoomed out, but are slightly bigger closer up?
Secondly, they don't seem to give you idea of site behind the icon without actually clicking on it - I thought one earlier version allowed hovering over a site to get a floating description?

I've reduced the icons to 20x20 and they now look OK in my Internet Explorer. It's not possible to make the icons zoom in size unfortunately.
I have 3 colours of these icons, do you think green, red or black would be better? I was going to use the red/green/grey colour coding for sites with and without photos but that is going to be 150 different icons types which might be a bit too much for the poor map! The same goes for rollover icons, I'll give them a go but it may make for too many types.

That size is much better. Green is easy on the eyes.

Icons look ok on Firefox. Green appears to be the best choice.
