AN INTERNATIONALLY famous Wiltshire attraction has come out top in a poll of the most distracting roadside landmarks.

Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain came top followed by the Angel of the North and the London Eye.

The survey, of 1,000 drivers, found that 66 per cent admitted they had been distracted by landmarks and had often taken their eyes off the road to look at them.

The poll by esure insu rance also revealed as many as 12 per cent of drivers have had an accident or a near-miss after losing concentration when passing roadside landmarks.

Nearly half (47 per cent) said national landmarks should not be built next to busy roads, while 49 per cent would support the erection of warning signs telling drivers to slow down when approaching landmarks. Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insu rance, said: "Spotting famous landmarks has long been a fun part of road trips, but this can also lead drivers to distraction as they take their eyes away from the road, slow down or brake suddenly.

"Motorists should keep their eyes on the road at all times - taking them off the road ahead even for a split second, could be dangerous.

"If motorists want to look at a landmark or take a quick photo, they should either pull into a lay-by when it is safe to do so or wait until they are not the ones in the driving seat."

What a sad world we live in, that people can drive from A to B and not check out in advance what they might see on their way.

I can just imagine them planning SH.
Ugge (Head of H&S)- "Can't put that stone there lads, they might build a road near it in the future. Could distract the driver."
Employee 1 - "What's a road?"
Ugge - "It's what them Romans are going to build for their chariots."
Employee 2 - "What's a Roman?"
Ugge - "Those Mediterrainean types that'll invade us in a few thousand years."
Employee 3 - "So if they've invaded us, would it matter if a few got killed 'cause they looked at our stone?"
Employee 4 - "And if they drove their chariots without due care and attention, because they were looking at our stone...
Ugge - "Put the stone up, no lots of stones, damn it build a bloody circle of them! The more that get killed looking at it the better."
