Baz's posting of the Atlatl Rock site in Nevada timed very nicely with my watching "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond on TV the other night.
It's always nice when you come across an idea which has been mulling in your subconscious for a while, only to be released as enlightenment when someone else joins the dots - and you say "Aha! Of course. I knew that".

Hi David
There is a book "Guns germs and Steel" by the author which may explain the different evolution of the European and American continent in more detail for those who missed the TV program.

I especially liked the bit about large domesticated animals, of which there are just 14, and only one of them (the llama) in the Americas.

De Soto's herd of pigs that his men drove through the south eastern part of what is now the United States, was quite possibly the most damaging attack a single small group of Europeans could have made against the native populations there. There is a growing belief that this portable larder spread massive influenza epidemics throughout eastern North America.
You'll find more in 1491 by Charles Mann. It's a popular work, but summarizes the analysis work of many scholars.
