Hiya
I'm new to all this but I'm going to be staying near castlerigg stone circle in the lakes over the summer solstice, do people go up there for midnight and do anything interesting or will I be sat there on my own?
I'm not anonymous its just I'm not registered, I do definately have a name though.

Castlerigg is still on my 'to see' list, but I think it's fair to say that most of the well known sites will be busy!

You certainly won't be on your own! Last year there was heading for 100 people, ranging from new age travellers to an over-50's cycling club. It was surreal. The lane next to the field was full by 4.15 and access became difficult.
Some had camped out in the stones, but most were visitors. Last year everyone visited on Saturday morning which meant there may have been more than usual.
I like to open my visit with 3 circuits of the stones, but the sheer volume of bodies made it impossible. The audience regarded me with suspicion too, so it was a bit off-putting. It was my first solstice at such a well-known site, and for me it was a bit impersonal. If you're there for the Solstice and not a religious event, then it's a wonderful group experience. We revisited at noon and it was magnificent!
I'm sure you'll enjoy it!!
We'll be at Whitby viewing from the cliffs.

I'll be up that way too during the Solstice, I too, thought about going along, maybe see some of you guys there then.

Can't help on Cumbria, but I'm overjoyed that we've just decided to drive down to Cornwall for the weekend!
Leave London Saturday morning, return on Monday...

I hope someone can help. I am planning to go to Cumbria (Castlerigg or Long Meg and her Daughters) for the summer solstice. I really don't know what goes on. Anyone got advice or information. I would much appreciate it.

Castlerigg is definitely worth the trip. The amount of people give a real 'live' feeling and a shared event at sunrise.
Long Meg, I believe, will be deserted or lonely at least.
Either way, say HI! if you see us. (me-green dress, small daughter-white dress)
Hope to see some like-minders there.

I'll be in Cumbria for Solstice this year! My first trip up that way. Not decided yet which site we'll visit on the day - don't like crowds too much, so we'll probably try to find somewhere quite rather than one of the hollywood sites.

So what happens. What time to people go etc. Do you live around there. I would also like to go to somewhere quiet, Alan S, but think I will go for Castlerigg for the first time - it is such a magical place.

Swinside is a gem, and less well known than Castlerigg.
The track up to it is a bit rough, but can be driven on, otherwise it's a 20+ min walk from the nearest surfaced road

I would like to go to Long Meg, that's a magical place. The sun will rise over the pennines and set over the lake district mountains. Maybe see you there Cicely!
Alternatively Mayburgh henge would also be fantastic.
I was down at Swinside Circle at the weekend. Its beautifully lonely there, with magnificent views to the fells all around. That would be a great place to visit for the solstice, I'm sure there wont be very many people there Alan.
Perhaps the ultimate wild and lonely experience would be to wild camp up on Moor Divock, near the Cockpit stone circle, fantastic views to the east.....
bother, I'm off dreaming again when I should be working.....

Egypt was great! I'll post a few more pictures; some of their "megaliths" are mind blowing. Sooo big, so perfect, so incredible. It was all awe inspiring, but I was really stunned by the funerary temples next to the Sphinx. I suppose I had been mentally prepared for the pyramids, and the Sphinx, but did not expect the funerary temples to be so prefect, and massive and well preserved.

You could find Swinside a good place to visit, but then, so could quite a few others if they want a big, lovely, scenic circle a bit off the beaten track!
Castlerigg is magnificent, but when I went there on Solstice eve in 2002 there weren't that many people around before 10pm. What it was like after that, couldn't say. (It seemed so dull after Stonehenge the previous year, and I was cold, so went back to my flat). Didn't go up there next morning. It was drizzly when I got up, much too late! Fieldside Grange on the eastern edge of Keswick is one of the nearest places to stay. Nice apartments, nice people, great views from front, and less than a mile uphill walk to Castlerigg.
Long Meg is great. Lovely place.
Ask 'JackME' when he returns from his hols. He lives near Swinside, so will know what it's like there.
Of course, *Nicola D* will know the best place!
May see you at Boscawen Un again this year??

Thank you all for all your help. Will look up the accomodation suggested and also look at the other sites you all talk about. Might meet up with some of you at the solstice!
