I have just been reading some of Geoff Kellaway's papers again -- and have been reminded that he made a strong suggestion that the Stonehenge sarsens came from the area around Chitterne. He specifically mentions the Chitterne sinkhole on the downs. He suggests that the sinkhole is very deep, with vertical sides going down at least 10m -- although it is now mostly filled with post-Cretaceous sediments. He suggests that the sink contained lots of sarsens which were relatively easy to recover. Does anybody know the site, and have some thoughts on this?
