Hi
I'm posting this partly because it might interest some members and partly because I want to know a little more about it.
A farm worker friend told me about this site (the souterrain, not the website ) , which is in Fife. I must admit "souterrain" is a new word on me. I went for a look and took some pictures. I've only had the DSLR since Christmas and it was my first attempt at photography in the dark so the results aren't great but I've uploaded some to Flickr anyway. Click here
I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about this site. I know that nobody is all that sure what they were for but I'd be interested to know a bit of the history. Has it survived in that condition all that time or is it likely to have been excavated/restored? It's accessed through a manhole cover, so it's clearly had some attention.
I didn't know what to expect at all and I was surprised to find that I'd spent over an hour down there, though taking the pictures was very time consuming.
I hope it's of interest and would love to know more about it.

That's very useful, thank you. It's interesting that the article is dated 1878, which is the date that J Hastie left his mark. Most of the dates I could read were from around the turn of the 20th century. Virtually every stone at eye level has something carved into it.
When I showed my 10 year old son the pictures he was disappointed not to have been there so I'll be going back so he can see it for himself. When I do go back I'll try and take better pictures.

I went back with my son and improved on the photos a wee bit. The lighting is better, I got some shots of the main chamber and there is a 5'1" child to give some impression of the size. These were 30 second exposures, which is 29.5 seconds longer than CB can stand still so he's less than pin-sharp . I've tacked them onto the end of the Flickr set.
The weather was utterly vile, a freezing and very strong wind, but you would never know once you're down there. It's certainly better at keeping the weather out than my 1960s house is.

Good pics , BT , I went last Saturday , mainly to see if there was any rock art , it does get re-used in souterrains . Nothing that I noticed except one stone which I think can be seen in one of your pics ,o nthe left of the passage . I'm pretty sure it is a local conglomerate and not carved though .

You managed to find it then
You must have just missed us, we were there late morning. As we were being blown across the field I was thinking nobody else would be insane enough to be out there on a day like that. Seems I was wrong I was quite pleased with the photos this time. I've a long way to go but I'm getting there.
How would you rate it as those sort of sites go?

Most are inaccessible /unexcavated /ruinous ,. There are a few in Angus that have been excavated and are in good shape but uncovered . Airlie like Ardross is still covered but I don't think you can visit . The access and condition make it a goodie .
