Folklore or Law/Lore Stones (not sure what to call them) appear to be ancient flat stones that held special legal status in the local community.
The Seat of Judgement stone found in Leighton Bromswold is flat and found on the Bromswold ridge. The official info about the stone states it was used as a place to collect taxes and criminals were brought to it for judgement.

The "LA TABLE DES MARTHES" in Jersey is a Folkloric Stone, this ancient flat stone was used by locals for signing contracts. Interestingly an excavation beneath the "table" found that it had been placed on top of upright stones placed in the ground.
LA TABLE DES MARTHES Click on "Standing Stones" then "Jersey" and its 3rd from the bottom.
I will suggest that most of these Lore Stones are unlikely to be totally naturally shaped "Glacial Erratics" but may have been chosen and carved due to the type of stone they are made of, or, brought into the area for this reason. Some Sarson Stones also appear to fit into this category.
The Whet Stone (Hergest Ridge) is also flat sided and has folklore attached to it. Does anyone know of the lore attached to it?

"Various sarsons around the village. One built in the church yard wall is called the Alter Stone."
Sarson Alter Stone
The "Stansted Airport Stone, Essex" discussion in the Forum and the article would appear to be a prime example of this type of Lore Stone.
Stansted Airport Stone
Just a few examples found within a couple of minutes of looking Maybe its time to look again at these stones and what the importance was of their place was in local society and history?
Any more information on these types of stones but especially the Folklore and myths attached to them would be very interesting.

Lore Stones (Table)
If you compare this Table Stone in France to the "La Table des Marthes" it appears they are similar. The Menhir de la Pierre Couchée is an odd shape for a fallen Standing Stone, it looks like it is found where it was set. The same for both of them.

Hi Matt -
It might be an idea to explore the old folk-moot sites which scatter our isles. The only single study on this, as far as I'm aware, was by Gomme, whose entire text is on-line, here:
http://socserv2.mcmaster.ca/~econ/ugcm/3ll3/gomme/PrimitiveFolkMoots.pdf
It's a mine of info about local ancient council gathering places, etc. If anyone knows of a more concise up-to-date survey, please tell!
