Do you load our data into your GPS as waypoints?
How do you do it?
If I was to support another download format for GPS, which should it be? (I can't support everything)
A better way is perhaps to stick with the current KML and CSV formats we offer and show people how to convert them to the format of their choice with other programs or web pages.
What would you recommend for waypoint conversions?
Is there anything else I could add that would improve the data downloads?
I don't personally use a GPS or satnav so I'm relying on those of you who use our data on these to make some recommendations. Thanks

What software do you use for conversion?
I've been using Gps Visualizer to convert my Garmin/MapSource .gdb tracks into Google Earth .kmz files.
I haven't tried GPSBabel - which I guess might convert the other way?
Another thing - is a .CSV file a common denominator, which everything can convert to/from? But only waypoints with .csv, no tracks, apparently.
Looks like GPSBabel is the one to have.

I don't. Currently the Portal is programmed to generate .kml files. I understand that the utilities you mention can convert from KML to files for use on satnavs and the like.
So in principle you can currently export MegPortal data to satnavs, but I don't think this is widely done or known about. So if I was to support one extra format to support satnavs more easily, what should it be?

I think the .KML file is fine, we just need to know how to convert it into a format readable by our individual GPS equipment.
GPSBabel will convert a .KML file into practically anything you want.
There's a free sample of it on the GPSVisualizer website:

(I had seconds thoughts about chucking a 1GB Portal file at it!)

There is one annoying problem with the kml files.
You can load it into GoogleEarth, and everything looks fine.
But when you safe, and restart GE, all the icons are looking like a mess. (I use version 4.3.7204.0836)
To transfer the data into my TomTom, i have to safe the data
from GoogleEarth, and convert the resulting file in Tyre.
Tyre - Trace Your Route Everywhere
This is freeware !

KML is fine for Google Earth but not really useful for converting into other fileformats. I like the CSV downloads.
I use these programs:

Me, I prefer to use good old maps, and bits of paper with notes written on them. Yes, I carry a gps with me out in the moors etc, but 99% of the time I just use this to record where I am.
On a couple of occasions I have tried to follow my gps to a place in teh middle of Dartmoor say, and all it does is lead me to the wrong place, because the initial data is not accurate. This happened only a couple of weeks ago when hunting down the Leskernick circles. And even if the positions are accurate, you still have to get there by following a map, for crossing streams, going round walls etc etc. Going in a straight line to an electronic point is very rarely an option.
Its the same sailing, particularly in the med. You have to navigate relative to the charts, and often they are (almost literally) miles out, but the only thing that matters to is the gps.
And just think of all them cars and lorries that get stuck in small city streets, or try and drive over cliffs.
Electronics ? good gadgets, but use your common sense and judgment first !

I have added the GPS / Satnav download box to the right hand side bar of the site page, visible to logged in users only. Hopefully more people will be able to find and use this feature.
You can currently download
CSV (Garmin/Navman)
KML (Google Earth)
CSV (Multipurpose Excel spreadsheet)
I will shortly be adding GPX format downloads to the list as apparently this is best supported on smartphones such as the iPhone and Androids.
