I've just finished a new top menu with drop downs which you can now try. I hope you find it useful. It should make it easier to jump directly to the most useful pages.

If you notice any problems with the new menu or the formatting please let me know here. If there are any other pages that you think should go in the menu please let me know too.

Competition for new images for our top menu

I would like to refresh the images used for our 'masthead' background at the top of every page. To be suitable your image needs to be of any sort of ancient site and to be able to work as a long thin strip format like the current ones.

Images need to be at least 1200 x 150 pixels (but by all means send the whole image so I can crop it down). As they need to be 1200 pixels across unfortunately I can't just pick images from our gallery so I hope you will e-mail some good ones for consideration.

Please don't submit them to the gallery - click on the 'Contact Editor' link to get my e-mail address to send images to.

If your image is selected for use you can choose a 30 point book from our 'Earn Rewards for Contributing' list. Your image will be credited in our FAQ and seen millions of times a year by our visitors. It must be your image, and as always, you keep the copyright of course.

So please get sending some images. You can send any that you think are suitable, there is no limit on numbers but please only send images that are bigger than 1200 pixels across and will work in a long thin strip format. of about 1200 x 150.
Thanks
Andy

Andy,
getting used to the top menu - the only thing I have noticed so far is that there isn't a readily available link back to 'Home' - I would often use this to get back there when I was a couple of layers into a section, as I could then get to anywhere on the site.

I've added Home to the first menu, thanks.

The next step is to copy this menu across to the other themes (it currently only works in the default Megalithic_New green theme.

Then I will gradually simplify the side menus to take out all but the most important menu options. This should improve the look and navigation of the site.

Cheers

Andy - I am also missing the 'search' box which was always very handy. I would tend to copy something (eg Grid Reference) from somewhere other than Portal and just drop it into the search box - clicking on enter and I'd know if you had something near or relevant.

The 'search our site' option in the left-hand menu is not only less obvious - the search option which comes up seems rather more complex than that just the box?

Andy,

it may be coincidence, but I realise that I have not had the maps of nearby sites on screen since the top menu changes? I have tried both in IE and Firefox - the respective maps are missing in each - and I have tried turning them off (even though they weren't actually 'on' of course!) and on again.

Anything else likely to cause this? I haven't made any changes to settings etc for ages, so I don't think this is anything I have triggered, but happy to hear suggestions...

Peter

The drop-down menus don't appear when I'm logged in.

The search box is to the top left of the page. If not, can you send more details.

Currenlty you need to be on the standard 'Megalithic New' dark yellow theme to get the new menu. I will copy it across to the other themes when I get a chance.

David - which browser are you using?

I've updated the selection of images in the background of our top menu. Many thanks to Peter Boyle and TheCaptain for the new images.

I'd like to feature some more of non UK sites to represent full range of what we cover. Photos need to be around 1200 x 250 and 'work' as a narrow horizontal strip . Please e-mail them over

Thanks
Andy
