I wrote to Derbyshire County Council to ask what they had on rock art in the county and they sent me some information from the Derbyshire CC: Historic Building, Sites and Monuments Record. One of the sites they refer to is called 'Stonelow Farm'. Its grid reference is SK 290716 and the only description they give is:
"2 cup-marked stones lying in the stack yard near the barrow' "
They give these references:
(1) Index: NDAT 2860, 2860, NDAT, ,
(2) Bibliographic reference: Descriptive Text, , Radley, J and Ramm, H RCHM, ,
Anybody have any information about this site or the cup marked stones in this area? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Hey up,
The stones from Stoney Low are long lost....the only reference to them came from a dude named Hugo Reads in the 19th Century.....What happened to them is a mystery....

There's an excellent article on Peak District Rock Art by John Barnatt in the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal, vol 102, 1982. The entry for Stone Low Farm is as follows:
'A nineteenth century letter from Hugo Reads notes that urns were found with two cupmarked stones lying in the stackyard near a barrow. He illustrated one [this is pictured in the DAJ on pg 40 and looks like a little smiley face]; it is difficult to determine if this is a genuine carving and it does not survive. Bateman notes that the barrow in the stackyard was dug in 1830; it contained two large urns holding cremations, flints and a miniature cup. It is likely to be the same barrow; the carved stones may have been part of the cist.'
