Is there a reason why big generalist museums in some of our major towns and cities don't display many if any British items?
Why does Manchester Museum for example, which apparently has many British antiquities and talks about them on its website yet does not display them?
Maybe they're just intended to feature foreign history but even so when they have British items in store it seems a pity not have a few token items on show.
Many of the local museums that do display ancient British history seem to be in a sorry state.

Agree as well. The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff is good as it show predominatly Welsh artifacts. I do enjoy looking round their new origins gallery. They have artifacts going back to the first humans in Wales right up till the early middle ages.
At the moment they have the Red Lady of Paviland on display, on loan from Oxford for a year.
Although I do find archaeology and finds from other parts of the world interesting, I personally think that the British finds should have much more prominance.
It is very frustrating to think that there are so many interesting and beautiful objects from throughout British history and prehistory that are stuck in museum cupboards and no-one gets a chance to see them.

Glad it's not just me then!
When I mentioned it another forum every hounded me for being so stupid - saying a) that these museums were set up to display just foreign items and b) there are plenty of local museums for that sort of thing (British prehistory)!
It all seems like a strange agenda - with more concern for politically correct posturing and appealing to kids - i.e. exhibition space given over to issues around e.g. racism, multiculturism, contemporary art etc... in fact anything but actual British history.
