LECTURE: Beheadings, burials and boundaries: the landscape of execution in Anglo-Saxon Wiltshire

An illustrated lecture by Andrew Reynolds, Reader in Medieval Archaeology at University College London.

The centuries between the end of the Roman rule and the Norman conquest are often viewed as barbaric and unruly. Dr Reynolds will consider the archaeology and history of judicial practice in Anglo–Saxon England, with specific focus on Wiltshire, looking at places of captivity, trial, ordeal and punishment. It will be seen that Anglo-Saxon kings operated an efficient and even fearsome judicial system, yet capital punishment was quite rare.

Dr Reynolds is one of the Society’s Trustees and the Editor of our journal WANHM, Secretary of the Society for Medieval Archaeology and a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquarians. He is the author of many books and articles on the archaeology and history of Anglo-Saxon England.
