On a recent visit to the portion of south west Illinois called "The American Bottom," I visited three small sites, one Paleo Indian and two Mississippian. Potentially one or more of them could be combined with a visit to the massive Cahokia site. All three are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Modoc Rock Shelter was used by a succession of post Ice Age hunters and gatherers along the Mississippi River. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=17811
The Common Fields Site in Ste Genevieve Missouri was a small Mississippian village with a platform mound in the days of Cahokia. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=17812
Emerald Mound is a large platform mound once surrounded by a village. Too large to destroy by typical plowing, it is small only by Cahokia standards. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=17088
Common Fields is on private land. And Emerald Mound, although state owned, is surrounded by private land. Both can be viewed from public roads.
