I'm just renewing my interest in megalithic sites. It was something I was into 30 years ago but which fell by the wayside during a couple of decades of living in London. Now I'm deep in the Normandy countryside, surrounded by menhirs and dolmens and it's getting a grip again.
I'm a professional writer & photographer and plan to make the local megalithic sites a major personal project. (Off to Carnac for a week in November).
So, any recommendations about which books to read to get me started again? I'd like something that discusses current thinking about stones, circles etc but without getting too mystical, misty-eyed & speculative.

Hello, we'd very much appreciate some photos and site information from 'on the ground' in Normandy as many of our site listings are based on map work.
I'm sure TheCaptain can recommend some books on French Stones
Introductory
Britain BC - Frances Prior
Hengeworld - Mike Pitts
Intermediate
The Stone Circles of Britain, Ireland and Brittany - Aubrey Burl and various other books of his
More Advanced
The Significance of Monuments - Richard Bradley
Understanding the Neolithic - Richard Thomas
Lots more recommended books will pop up in the margins as you browse this site
Cheers

Megaliths, Stones of Memory - Jean Paul Mohen is an inexpensive starter:

I expect he has some books in French too

Thanks for the recommendations, Andy. I'll be happy to contribute info & pix. I'll probably also blog the project.
