The autumnal equinox seems to land on the 23rd this year.
Is this unusual??

Not really, looking back in the last few years, it has either fallen on the 22nd or the 23rd.

It's been on the 23rd September for 64% of the last 25 equinoxes.

P.S. The Christian church defines 21st March as the Vernal Equinox in order to calculate Easter. When I was at Chichen Itza two years ago I had a hard time convincing people that it was on the 20th that year.
