Wideford writes: I attended a talk last night by Anne Brundle of Orkney Museum on Bu Broch ( HY270093 now levelled but with earlier structures still beneath ). Many dispute the name of broch because it is dated right back at 800 B.C.E. and even by the widest dates for the Broch Age this is several centuries earlier than the rest.
Now , however , there is a broch currently being excavated in Shetland that may provide comparable dating . Still the structure itself (9.1m internal diameter) appears unique because of the extreme thickness of the walls (5.2m) and these being completely solid to boot.
So the question is is this simply a very early form of what later became the broch ( similar examples or intermediary stages could have been missed to date or lost through later building ) or something else entirely . Other than a most peculiar form of roundhouse Anne had no suggestions ( she mentioned round houses of the Bronze Age but ruled these out of contention as progenitors but...).
