I was going to call this a competition but it's more like a reward scheme as there's something for everyone who takes the trouble to contribute. The Portal does bring in some advertising revenue and I've been trying to work out how best to use it to develop the site further. Here's what I've come up with:

As you contribute information to the Portal, keep a tally of what you have sent us. Add up your contributions as follows:

* New Site Page that we don't have, with a short description of the site (submit these at http://www.megalithic.co.uk/submitsite.php ) Score: 1 point

You don't have to have visited the sites yourself, the information can be researched from books or the web. You do need to work out a lat/long or grid reference (UK or Ireland) for the site to count. Working out the location of sites that are in the news is also something we like to do, so these will count towards your score.

The lat/long can be of the nearest village if you can't work out the exact location of the site. If you do this, please include the text "IMPORTANT NOTE: Location is of the nearest village" in your description otherwise we will end up with some mighty annoyed GPS users and we don't want that.

* Photo of an ancient site that we didn't have a photo of (was a text page only). Submit photos from links at the top-right corner of the page.

Score: 1 point per site you have added photos for

* Adding a description of a site we have a blank site page for with no text at the moment Score: 1 point

Descriptions must be several paragraphs, be historical or geographic based and reasonably well written.

So a new site page, with photos counts as 2 points, or 3 points with a good description

* Feature article or book review, 12 points
Must be your original writing and be of a reasonable length, ie enough to count as a proper article. See our Features section to get an idea of what's suitable. (If you want to review a particular book, please get in touch and we should be able to get a copy for you from the publisher. You will be expected to write a review though)

Keep adding the points up, and keep a note somewhere safe of what you scored the points for. You can remind yourself of photos and most other contibutions by clicking 'Your Own Page' in the menu.

When you get to 15 points you can claim either a free book from our free book list or a £5 voucher to spend in our online shop. The book list will be updated regularly so keep checking it for interesting titles.

Or keep adding up your points until you get to 30 points, at when you can claim a £10 voucher (or 2 free books, should you want them)

No more rewards accrue after you get to 30 points otherwise you will bankrupt me!

I will keep running this scheme until at least the end of 2008 then I'll see if we can afford to keep running it after that.

Unfortunately the Portal can't keep tabs of your total itself as I've just made these rules up and they are a bit complicated for its little computerised brain to cope with, but I will be checking against what you've submitted myself so no cheating

Some basic Rules:

Sites added must be of a 'prehistoric' nature, or a few other categories of 'ancient site' that we include. This usually means pre-Roman for Europe, or 'pre-Columbian' for the Americas. For elsewhere, ask and we will have a think. Generally we're looking for things that are BC (BCE) rather than AD (CE).

Other types of site that we include are Holy Wells and Ancient Crosses (UK and Ireland only, and only up to 1000 AD) and some other types of 'Dark Ages/Early Medieval' period site such as Pictish Symbol Stones. Again, ask if in doubt.

Common sense applies to what is a 'new site', what constitutes an adequate description or photo etc ie. please don't submit a new site page for every barrow in a barrow cemetery! You can submit photos of each barrow and we'll see how many it's reasonable to score for but the point is to get completely new sites and photos added so I'm sure you get the idea.

Photos and text must be your copyright (or old out of copyright stuff).

We have to use what you contribute on the site for the points to count. The main reason we wouldn't use something is if it is too 'off topic' or outside our time period. If in doubt, ask.

They must not have been previously posted elsewhere on the web (with the exception of your personal web site or general purpose web gallery sites such as Flickr or similar.) I will make an exception for information from old books posted elsewhere on the web that I would like to include here.

My decision is final in interpreting these rules, I will try to be flexible and fair with scoring. If you have just contributed lots of information in the past couple of months and feel you should get a reward too, contact me with the details as I don't want to leave anyone out.

That's it. Get submitting! To claim your reward, send me a Private Message containing your score and what it was earned for and I'll get back to you in due course. Sometimes I don't get to look at PMs for a few days so please be patient.

Thanks,
Andy B

Great idea Andy
Perhaps admins like myself should be exempted from the reward scheme in order to leave more resources for the amateurs.
cheers

Thank you Alex for your kind offer.

But are you really a 'professional'? I don't think so!

Please join the queue with the rest of us 'amateurs'.

The term Amateur or Professional should not be seen as condesending or derogatory to one side or an other. Perhaps it should be seen like the Olympics, which were for years only open to Amateurs. Admins shouldn't be handing themselves medals. Poor corporate Governance or insider trading

Admins and other regular contributors can claim books, or not as is their preference. No discrimination other than I have to limit the quantity to each person.

If you have spare funds to contribute rather than information, you can use the Donation Form and help keep the rewards scheme going long-term:

Alex mentioned medals in his post. Can I have a medal instead?

err... on second thoughts I'll take the books

The Megalithic European by 'Julian' Cope at 45 points? Not sure. Is it really worth 45?

Well it is in weight terms, they are going to cost me £8 each just in postage as they are real doorstops. Plus giving them away free appeals to my sense of the absurd
I've moved it to the 30 point category to get them shifted...
