Just ran across a few interesting photos of a site in Japan said to be 4 to 5 thousand years old. See here and here. And here and here, too. There are pictures of reconstructed pit dwellings from that time, also, if you page through this fellow's photos a bit.
This is a (rather badly translated ) site about megalithic culture in Japan.
