EAST KINGSTON -- The East Kingston Historical Committee hosts local authors and stone structures experts, Mary Gage and James Gage, on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m., at the East Kingston Town Hall, 7 Main St.

This mother/son duo will offer a video presentation, "America's Stonehenge: The History of a Sacred Place." The film reconstructs the 2,500-year cultural history of the America's Stonehenge archaeological site in Salem. The complex of stone chambers, standing stones and other stone structures at the site served as an important spiritual and ritual center for a group of ancient Native American people.

Construction of the complex began more than 3,000 years ago and evolved through five major periods of construction and change until its final closure with the arrival of European colonists. The Native Americans left an archaeological record of their ritual activities and spiritual beliefs. Mary Gage meticulously researched the site for years and reconstructed its cultural history. The film is based on her book, "America's Stonehenge Deciphered" (Powwow River Books, 2006).

I hope they include all the "re-building" William Goodwin did at the site in the 1930's in his attempt to prove that it was built by Irish Monks. He removed sections that did not back his theory.

Don't count on it if it's James Gage. I mentioned that once on an American stone work site and he was pretty angry.

Well, if he wants to atribute the efforts of a 1930's tourist attraction booster to ancient people, then the East Kingston Town Hall appears to be the best venue for him. Its a pity. The site seems to have been so messed about with.
