Stoopid question number 556........In the absence of spirit levels, how was it known when things were horizontal? Or was it (to use the technical term), 'Rack O' Th' Eye?
PS 2-0 WHITEWASH.

Bermardquatermass,
Water always finds level.
If you flood the foundations and use a dip stick, you will have level.
Same with anything, easy to make a bowl arrangement and fill it with water.

A triangle with a plumb line and a marking on the base side is good, and portable.
PS Bernard. How does a man from the wrong side of the Penines know anything about cricket. Now we've won we can bicker among ourselves,eh ?

Sem.............How do.....Levelling a massive site for building on must have taken some doing.
I grew up with cricket, one of my childhood memories is of Freddie Truman dressed as a woman, with long pigtails, coming out to bat at a charity match in Denby Dale ,Yorkshire, with a foot wide bat.
That must be 50 years ago now WOW!

The weather won the 2nd match, not your team.
Aussies don't like playing with wet balls

RE; ........The 3rd match in the finals..........How do you cancel an order for 30,000 pies at one days notice?
PS This isn't the best place to discuss cricket, any suggestions?

Bernard, the image you put in my mind is nothing less than superb. Freddie would probably have needed a plumb-line to take guard correctly.
Maybe the Sacred Sites Forum is the best place to discuss cricket. They seem to discuss everything else there and at least this would bring a touch of class. There again, maybe three wins in a row against the Aussies is too fantastic for even them to believe.

Hi
Are you asking this question because of a particular site or just sites in general?
As for massive sites, there are some exceptionally large hillforts in Dorset/Somerset which dwarf modern construction jobs when considering the different technological abilities.
Of course there is the old answer to large scale manpower projects. The people in charge who wanted the sites built had big whips!

Karloff.......How do..........I just have to marvel at the accuracy and workmanship that goes into building places like Dun Carloway or Maeshowe. All the thin slivers of stone fitted between the main building blocks,to level them up.

Today I was reading a 1936 account of stone wedges found lying by the "pillar stones" of the Ring of Brodgar

My memory of Freddie T (Sir Fred now I see) is of him saying, on the field in a stage whisper, "gie us t'ball Len, and I'll pin 'is ****ing ears to t' ****ing saaghtscreens" when a ? Lancs batsman was giving us (Yorkshiremen & assorted others like me) some difficulty. Can't remember where but it was about 50 years ago & the beer was good.
