Thanks for that Tim. I sometimes visit a couple of these whilst staying at my youngest son's home in Derby.
For anyone interested in this picturesque tradition I'd suggest a visit to Tissington, as I'm pretty sure it has one of the oldest, and usually the best. I've posted a pic of one of its wells (Coffin Well) visited in 2003.
[I'm sure I combined that with a visit to Arbor Low.]
Ashford-in-the Water is good, also. Both villages have approximately 5 separate wells that are 'dressed' during the season. IIRC the flowers only stay fresh for about 4 days, as the clay base dries out.

We were nearly at the Wirksworth one... my mother in law has helped out nearly all her life on completing one of the dressings each year, and then serving tea and cakes all weekend long!
Hope you took a peep at the Saxon stones in St Marys; very nice stuff.
