I think it's about time we ran a competition and I've had the idea to do something different to just another photo competition.

How about something to encourage other creative processes about ancient sites?

We could have the following categories.

1) Painting, sculpture or other art
2) Creative writing (could be a factual article, trip report, short story or poem)
3) Audio (music, spoken word / short podcast or other audio)

The creation would have to relate in some way to an ancient site and be created soley by you as an amateur.

Any thoughts? Do you have anything you could submit or be inspired to create for us. I'd allow 3 months or so until the closing date to give plenty of time.

Secondly I'm looking for prizes for the above categories. I already have the promise of some T shirts and card reproductions so any other offers of prizes are very welcome. They will get your product or service lots of free publicity.

Andy,
as a fairly new member of the Portal, I had been looking forward to the next competition...and now you suggest it not being a photographic one!

I can see that you would want to broaden the scope, but for the sake of those of us without other skills, can I make a plea for at least one category to be photographic? It was a very long tome ago, but I suspect my art teacher will still remember my efforts well enough to be able to give me a 'note' saying that I should be excluded from any painting or drawing!

I'd like to enter a photograph of something I'd make from 'Bluestone' and donate what I make as a prize.

I think PAB has a good idea--include photos with the other categories. The only thing is, who will judge the different categories?

A megalithic short story . . . Could be a lot of fun!

Mike,
Thanks very much for the offer. You couldn't be a sponsor and enter as well though. Send me a photo of your creation and I'll have a look.
Cheers

That's OK Andy, I'm not really one for competitions anyway. I've just finished three stones today, (two of them for Portal members) so I still have the diamond cutter from work at my disposal. I'll start making something tomorrow and send you a pic by email during the week. If it's worthy of being presented as a prize then you'll be welcome to it, if not, I'm sure I'll be able to give it away.
It's just my way of showing my appreciation to you at the end of the day for giving me so many chances here on the Portal.
Cheers

Andy,

2 suggestions for you to think about....

First: either pictures, creations or poems etc related to WATER and megaliths? That may give enough scope for all -

Second: there may be 'mileage' in something around a theme of routes ... such as trackways, ancient tracks, links between sites....

I was thinking of this while waiting for a good shadow-shot of what I think must have been a 'pilgrim way' near me showing up in the late afternoon sun...and that may give scope for both descriptions ( like the recent N Wales one of the old route across the hills), Angie's comments on the Stonehenge 'village' report, as well as photos and other media?

I don't see the connection with water...? Holy wells and springs and so on yes definitely but not my bathwater and rubber duck

Anything related to ancient sites will be OK so trackways and so on between sites, no problem. Anyway, start thinking as I will get this set up a competition, I just need to get my act together.

Mike, we'll take you up on the competition prize, that's very good of you. Hold tight and don't send it anywhere just yet though...

Andy,

Your latest post pondered why the 'water' link in my earlier comment... it was just a suggestion for narrowing the field. I had noticed how many of the sites I happen to like are either by or in sight of water (river, coastal, well etc), so it seemed a possible compulsory element to build in to a competition. Same notion I suppose with the trackway idea...anything (picture, story, description etc) that had a route/trackway element in it....

Perhaps you're right, and I should skip the water idea and go direct to red wine!

Peter
