I am seeking advice about "inexpensive" hand held GPS gadgets that give co-ordinates using the UK OS grid system.
After decades of map reading and taking compass bearings I want to make life easier.
I only want to know where I am
i.e.no waypoints, altimeter, fishing & bear hunting data, or "phones".

Uncorroborated, but I heard that Staples were selling the yellow Garmin Etrex, at a bargain price of £65.

I doubt you'll get better value than that, if it's true...

I've got a top-of-the-range Etrex, and its invaluable when out and about.

Hi
I bought the Magellan Sportrak bundle for about £165 from www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk and I have had hours of fun with it. Yes its got the fishing & hunting (but you can swith that off) waypoints and routes are great fun. Landmark your stone circle using lat&long and British National Grid to 5 digits. I also bought the shareware program oziexplorer (about £50, but there is a trail version available from www.oziexplorer.com) a fabulous mapping program. Scan a map, calibrate it (tell it 3 or more known positions) now you can plot any point on the map and tell your gps where you wish to go (using waypoints and routes) or in reverse send the track (a record of where you have been) from the gps back to the map and see where you actually travelled. I have a lovely track showing where I got lost on Merthyr Mawr Warren

We've got the yellow Garmin eTrex and its fantastic - easy to spot if you drop it in the grass too!

With the exchange rate as it is have you considered buying from the US? When I was planning my purchase the prices were comparable even with the postage!

Cheers

One possible 'gotcha' with this approach is the base map data will be US based, rather than european. Just something to be aware of...

When serving with the Army, I was once on the receiving end of a brace of mortar rounds, which could easily have spoilt mine and my mates' entire day.

When we checked, it turned out that our new lieutenant had given co-ordinates using his new GPS, which he had just bought in the States.

No doubt he is now a general, but if we had caught up with him then, it would have taken a surgeon to reunite him with his new toy, but be warned !!!
