Rbatham,
Jarrow has strange memories for me, I used to box for Burtons tailoring, and fought outside at Jarrow many years ago, I had an horizontal view of the place.

Strange how they waffle on about the Light?
Quaran 24.35,
Light upon light, god guides whom he will to his light.
Not too many see the light, I did many years ago in Jarrow, a sort of blinding light as you hit the canvas.
You won't SEE the light with your eyes.

Thanks for the link Kev. been there already.
I've been looking into history. Bede didn't use AD as we know it for his dates. nor BC. In fact he gives the date of Caesar's invasion as fixtyith (60th) the before the conception, anno dominus incarnatius. So where does our 55BC come from? In his last book of 'English history' he cites two solar eclipses 538 and 540. Of the 2nd he says the stars were visible. These were before his time so he didn't witness them. Oddly enough they were only partial in England. They were near total and total in ROME.

Our calandar (the Gregorian) was introduced in 1582 (although not accepted in England until 1752). Before that the Julian calandar was used and was introduced by Julius Ceaser in 46BC (as reconed on our Gregorian calandar). Thus Bede used the Julian Calandar.

Can only find one photo of inscription on tomb and that's only his name! This is on:
http://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/history/saints

Apparently his body was moved from the monastery in Jarrow to Durham around 1020, he died in 735. Mithra.

Hi karloff, Yes, Bede used the Julian calendar including
AUC- ad urbae condita ,reckoned at 753 BC He started the use of anno domini in England, but anno domini incarnatius 25th march which had been used in Rome for about 150 yrs he never used the abbreviations AD, BC, I also note that those two eclipses were both in error by 1 day. Roy

Thanks Mithra, been there and
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/bede-book1.html
Some controversy, Some sites describe him as well-travelled, others say he never left Wearmouth
Evidently Wearmouth was later destroyed by the Danes .His remains moved 1025 to Durham so that tomb may not be the original. I wanted to see if the date was followed by AD .DCCXXXV

I've been to several sites since posting. Now I find that the present tomb dates from 1831. So verification of the date of his death is not possible this way. Ah well can't win 'em all. Roy
