Would this 'ere "Phoenician pillar" have anything to do with one of the altars found here, but which is in fact Roman in nature/origin? Twas thought by Anne Ross and others to be a Mars deity - that's assuming it is the same thing mentioned by Wilkins, who did tend to flights of fancy and enjoyed the old "everything-came-from-the-East"-thinking. so beloved of academics and antiquarians alike.

.....hello again.
Not sure what happened there. My last few sentences disappeared. In the Royal Commission's Gloucestershire Cotswolds book for the Iron Age and Romano-British monuments, they mention several altars found in Bisley: one with a serpent on it; another a figure mounted on a horse (thought to be a Mars deity). Does our old Harold say anymore about the 'Bisley Stone'? The Royal Commission mentions there may have been six such altars from this area. But rest assurred, they're not Phoenician - just good old fashioned Romano-British stuff.
Hope that helps.

Ross also says, that the r/b altars were found in a 17th "barrow" folly at Tiddenham and may have come from the Lydney temple overlooking Severn estuary... that is of course if it is what you are talking about ;)
