While reading abiut Saxon kings fo the other thread I came across this paragraph.
'Mention has been made of King Alfred's creation of a navy. That navy was not wholly used to repel invaders Much of his time was spent in sending out voyages of trade and discovery. Having learned that there were colonies of Christian Syrians on the coasts of Malabar and Coromandel, he sent Swithelm, bishop of Sherbourne to India on a voyage at that age surrounded by perils and difficulties. Swithhelm however performed his jouney in safety and brought back gems and presents from Indian princes.'
The source of this is said to be his own writing, but I don't know where the authors of my book got it.
If it happened at all did Swithelm sail the Med then overland to India or did he round Africa and beat Vasco Da Gama by about 600yrs? Roy

Seen as I live in Sherborne I could look into this for you and see if there are any references made in Abbey library or museum. Sounds very intriging.

The great cartographers Mercator, Ortelius etc make reference to documents outlining this journey round the South of Africa well before 'accepted' historical documents make mention of it taking place in the middle ages.

Earliest of all is the compilation by Claudius Ptolemy who worked in the library at Alexandia 1000 yrs before Mercator/Ortelius etc and put together a stystem of 'Geography' outlining co-ordinates on a grid scale for Africa, Europe incl Britain and most of Asia. It shows people were making incredible journeys all over the place just a couple of hundered years AD.

And there was Pharoah NechoII who sent an expedition from the Red sea about 600 BC. they returned 2-3 yrs later through the Med. Herodotus later disbelieved the story because they was the sun to the north.
thinking about Swithelm, no time is given for the journey or any other details. At that time the muslims were spreading eastwards from Saudi Arabia. but the mid eastwas still controlled by the Constantine's Eastern Empire. Alexander the great had reached India, but returned. The Romans had definitely traded with Indians because hordes of coins found there. So trade caravans could have still been plying between India and Constantinople. Roy
