Having spent time in intimate communion with my Stonehenge 1:25,000 map, I see there is another cursus starting at SU104434... there is not a lot on this out there! We don't even have it listed here (shock!).
Does anyone know anything of consequence about this?
Cheers

Flash earth records it (just!) here... http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.190564&lon=-1.850628&z=16.1&r=0&src=2
Looks as if it's pretty well ploughed out.

There are plans to excavate the lesser Cursus sometime over the next 7 years.

Thanks Jimit, Pete.
I'll add it on to the Portal's database in the next day or two unless I get beaten to it.
What do you think about this, then as the Possible Remains of a cursus in Staffordshire? A finger of a rectangle pointing SE between the road, and the railway line.
Must take a look there myself sometime...
Cheers, Tim

Shropshire traveller,
What is the works in line with this, it looks like a quarry or a salt store?
When I wander around cursuses, with my own strange methods , I do find a particuler setup, they normally run between two distinct other sites, one will normally be a circle, often they curve around a circle as they head for the other destination, I also find that they are in groups , sort of triangulating three or more sites, the embankments will have been of chalk, or the remains of limestone quarrying, so a carefull slice into any embankment may reveal this.
The embankments of henges are similer, and I would suspect these were the same, the residue from quarrying for flint and such similer hard materials, they may have then discovered by accident how the embankment manipulates what I follow, all just my opinion.

| I'm often on multimap and look at the aerials, nearly everywhere I see traces of circles which may or may not be 'henges' it could be that I'm expecting to see something. Imagination ?Next time i see something i.ll post it here

Rbatham,
When I visit HENGES, and so called roman forts, which we have in abundance, I look around in my own little way, and as this is the stones forum , i will not say too much, but, most of the henges seen from my point of view are arranged around several circles, often two or more situated inside the henge( visualise Avebury) these then create smaller circles around them, the henge is then sited on the outer edges of these smaller circles, usually in a sort of rectangle with rounded corners, luckily some have some of the stones still inside arranged around the bigger circles, but I can sort of see where they all used to stand.
Some are smaller and arranged around just two or three closely grouped circles, and look like the chain on a bicycle, anyway dont just look for circles, but groups of circles, will have to leave before a bolt of lightening hits me, good hunting.

Hi Rbatham
Yes I like to think I see things in many places, too; ever hopeful, am I - but the difference here is that this is recorded on the SMR... and if this is what shows in the aerial pic, it's quite significant for Staffordshire.
I'll need to go & take a look sometime!
Cheers

| 7 years is a long time to wait. By excavate do you mean to actually 'dig'. I'm not up with modern day archaeological methods, but I have thought that a lot of sites could be surveyed first with Ground penetrating radar. and X-raying of Tumuli should also be possible. Roy
