mithra,

I have just submitted a new site to the Portal which you may want to add to the list - what a wonderful journey it would be to visit all the places suggested in response to your question!

The site is St Ninian's Isle on Shetland, and it just feels so special, I think it must have been entrancing people for millenia. Definitely one to add to your intinerary.

I notice a lot of places end in bury. Glaston,Ave, Ames, Sil, Salis, Ayles, now Choles
Is the bury part derived from as in 'inter'? Bury, OE 'byrgan?, or from' Burgh' ,Borough ,O- Teut, bergan to shelter, or 'castle' .Also Lough-boro, Middlesboro, etc

Roy (and others). The megalithic portal has many features which it seems many people do not realise. I suggest you find a site that you would like to find out more about, and play around with the various links that we have on the site pages. There's lots more than just pictures available on here.

For the "official" English Heritage information about scheduled sites in England, which we have here on the portal, use the link to Defra's Magic Map on the site page. This is the square grey icon with an "i" in it at the top of the site page. This brings up the magic map of the locality, from where if you use the "i" information button, then click on the feature you require, and lo and behold, you will get to the English Heritage scheduling information for the site. For Cholesbury I have now added the link to this information directly as a comment on the sitepage.

Alternatively, near the bottom of the sitepage, above the comments, there is a link to a google search for information.

Of course, there are the more obvious links to maps and aerial (and satellite) photos of the area, right down to links to local pubs, and hotels.

Enjoy.

I'm looking for definite evidence of Churches being built on previously used ancient sites and would be interested to hear from anyone who knows of one (or more!).
I know of Rudston Church with it's bronze age 25ft monolith in Churchyard. I have also noticed Churches built on mounds and have heard that there are some with obvious standing stones in walls but have no details.
Can anyone help please? (But please no energy line etc. stuff!) Mithra.

Walter Johnson's fine study nearly 100 years ago, Byways in British Archaeology (Cambridge University Press 1912) wrote considerably about this issue, pp.1-100, with a further 300 pages exploring other British heathen associations in the xtian substrata. The book cannot be recommended highly enough if you wanna explore this arena.
