Silly question from me who is still learning:
Are palstaves the same as axe heads?
If not, what is the difference?

Hi Tim,
A palstave is a bronze axe type in which the blade is divided from the heel by a ridge with shallow grooves on either side of the heel to facilitate hafting. Middle Bronze Age development from the flat and flanged axes of the Early Bronze Age. Later succeeded by the still more efficient socketed axes of the Late Bronze Age. Penguin Archaeology Guide

Thanks... that's helpful - but what is hafting? It is not a verb with which I am familiar, and I have no dictionary to hand until 5 hours plus away!
Cheers

Haft is the shaft or handle that the palstave or axe head is fittted to. Tim, have a look at the reproductions in Andy's Megalithic shop. Better to see axes and palstaves than me trying to describe them

Thanks Thorgrim.... having never visited that part of the shop, it's not something that had sprung to mind.
Cheers
