Shortly after 9600 BCE the inhabitants Of Gobecki Tepe in SE Turkey carved 7 tonne,2.4m high T shaped pillars from insitu limestone. Two pillars were erected in an excavated circle and were surrounded by 8 evenly spaced pillars, with stone benches between them.K Schmidt has excavated four of these megalith structures, which the local people had buried. At that time there were no human habitations in the immediate area and Schmidt [1999] suggested that they were ritual sites. At Nevali Cori there are similar structures [ca 9450 +/- 500a].
These are extremely early megalith structures and predate those in western Europe and southern Egypt by ca 3.5Ka.Has anyone have information about any megalith construction between 9500 and 6000 BCE?
