If the parking is full for West Kennet, what other options are there available?
Last time we went past we were actually waved on by police as the parking and roads were gridlocked... am going to make a special detour for this site, and I so want to get there. Will likely be lunchtime on a weekend.
Thanks, Tim.

Parking at West Kennet consists of a short layby. There's also the car park at Silbury a couple of hundred yards down the road. The pub toward Beckhampton (1/2 mile?) may also have some space.
There are some that say you should park at the NT car park at Avebury and walk down past Silbury. Not something I've ever personally done, I must say.
You may be lucky and find some off-road space around East Kennet, but leave space for tractors!
Finally, there's the start of the Ridgeway at the Sanctuary which has space for a few cars, but is a slightly longer walk. But then, looking at some of your trips, I'm guessing a walk of a mile or three won't be too much of a hardship for you!

Thanks Ocifant - appreciated. Alone, I don't mind walking 12+ miles in a day across mountainous terrain, but with youngun's, that's different (especially when one of them's only been walking a few weeks - the nearer the better!)
Good to see you,
cheers

Theres been a lot of good work recently at West Kennet to make it more accessible but parking seems to have been forgotten. The layby is only useable out of season, or after six in summer. The parking at Silbury is better, but not ideal, especially crossing the busy road. My preferred parking is at Knap Hill but thats far to far for toddlers. Suggest parking at East Kennet and taking a walk along the river to the barrow - great views, fab walk for little ones and not so very far to put them on shoulders when they become a little tired.

Thanks again; useful information - will take note. This is one (perhaps) definitive monument I have yet to visit, and I think I have a journey coming up where a small detour makes it do-able.
Cheers

Thanks everyone - couldn't find any***** on Nat Trust entry for Avebury about West Kennet, but was very pleased to pull up to a near empty layby on Saturday... yeah, superb, sunny visit, and even had about 15 minutes alone in the barrow. Splendid splendid.
I was also advised about car security here... a pile of shattered glass was witness to that, I assume.
Depending on what's here already, there may be some pictures to follow!
Gratefully
