I am here because these two books are very unusual and probably rarely seen outside of a protected environment, and of all people that I could think of who would care for these books and truly love them would be those interested in preserving archeological antiquities.
The Antiquities of Scotland
Volumes One and Two
by Francis Grose Esq. FAS
Printed in London, 1797
These books are very fragile, but they are full of etchings and descriptions of ruins throughout all of the Counties of Scotland. Many are castles, abbeys, towers and churches, but there are etchings in these books that look like they are little more than a pile of rocks strewn about.
Please note that I will not scan these etchings for anyone as the books are simply too fragile. That will be the work for a preservationist that knows what the heck they are doing.
There is a very interesting map that folds out of Volume one... but it is very delicate.
Also, I have an interesting Magazine here that may interest some of you (in slightly stronger condition):

A name that many of you have no doubt been aware of for some time. There are some nice aerial photos in this article, but a very interesting series of detailed drawings of the layout of Newgrange in County Meath in Eire. (sic)

If the books are too fragile to scan an image from them, which I do appreciate, could you take some photos with a digital camera and post those, please?

Hello, Tim!
Two years ago I was offered $1200.00 for the pair in the city that I used to live in.
There are only two other locations that I know of that have these books. One is in the UK adn the books that they have are in worse shape (missing covers, etc.,) and the other is in the US, but these particular volumes are a later Edition printed by the same publisher about 25 years later in the 1800s. The two that I have are actually part of a much larger set of books written by Francis Grose.
They were brought here to America by my father's natural father. No one knows for certain when, and no one really knows his name since my father was raised by adoptive parents and the records were sealed in 1933.
So - that is about all of the history that I can possibly give you about the books, other than I have tried to care for them for the past 40 years and they are far too old not to be cared for properly. by the time my sons are old enough to do something besides turn the pages into paper airplanes they will have fallen to dust and thes beautiful etchings will have been scattered about. I have handled these books with white cotton gloves only.
I am going to try to get some photos posted of the books tonight. We will see what happens

Those are the two places that I found also. The descriptions of the books on biblio.com are similar. I don't know exactly what "foxing" is... but I would imagine that the two volumes that I have here are in similar condition. They both have the original calfskin covers also, and they are also detached.

Foxing is where you get little brown spots on the paper, which is to do with impurities in the paper:
