Does anyone know the identity of a stone circle on the Old Marlborough to Bath Road? The road runs from the Manton House Farm turning on the Rockly Road to Avebury.
The stone circle is about 1 to 1 1/2 miles along, on the right hand side by a copse of trees.
Is it somthing that has been made recently? Please help, as no-one seems to know anything about it!

I tried Magic Map and couldn't get anything up for that grid ref. There's the Manton Barrow to the SW of which there is some info on TMA. Pete G is the local expert...anything known Pete?

There is a 'Manton Circle' marked on the MAGIC map at SU158714, as cjw says. You have to go to a resolution of 1:10,000 or greater to see it. It doesn't appear to be scheduled; it can't be a stone circle....can it?

Hello,
Yes it is a stone circle...But I have been unable to find anything out about them.
I know the downs very well, and have spent many hours on them but I never saw this circle until winter 2002.
The stones are small - about 1- 3 ft high and there are 16 of them.
When I am back in Marlborough from University I will go to them again. I do have some pictures and I will put these onto here too.
Thanks.

The previous reply and this one are CJW - the system won't let me log on at the moment.
Could it be a circle that has been built recently?

There's the Manton Down Long Barrow?
English Heritage say:-
Quote:
| In the early 19th century, Colt Hoare referred to the mound being "set round with stone". |
|
...and it seems to wander about all over the countryside down there:-
Quote:
| Barker recently suggested that the Ordnance Survey siting of the barrow to SU 15137140 is incorrect. He noted possible remains of the barrow at SU 14787135. However, mapping from air photographs by RCHME suggests that the Ordnance Survey grid reference is correct, and that Barker observed sarsens removed by the bulldozer.

It is a relativly new circle built in the late 90's.
JJ and I flew over it recently.
I'll post a photo.

Thanks, thats the circle.
If it was not built until the late 90's, then it would also go part of the way to explain why I had not seen it before. I thought that it may of been built recently.
Thanks again.

My husband was Farm Manager at Manton House Farm for a short period in 1977-8. The then owner, John Bloomfield, who had many connections in the world of popmusic and show business, planned the circle. Presumably he also had it built. We reurned to Australia late in 1978, an we heard a few years later that the farm had changed hands, but I think John would have completed the circle before selling.
I decided to enter the farm in Google after hearing the Manton Gallops mentioned as a training ground for Australia's Equestrian Olympic Team. It is really good to see the aerial photo. It was a magical 18 months living in that area - we were in Redposts Barn, at the end of the little road into Manton.
Cheers from OZ! Sam Laurence.
