Hi coldrum
For North Wales and Powys the absolutely essential books for everyone from newbies to archaeology professors are the two CADW books:
A Guide to Ancient and Historic Wales - Gwynedd by Frances Lynch
A Guide to Ancient and Historic Wales - Clwyd and Powys by Helen Burnham
CADW Guides
Other good stuff:
Excavations in the Brenig Valley edited by Frances Lynch
A Cambrian Archaeological Monograph again published by CADW. Although a technical report on the massive archaeological investigations at Brenig prior to the flooding of the valley in the mid seventies, this book is very readable and gives incredible insight into the monuments and their creators.
CADW Archaeological Reports
The Archaeology of Clwyd edited by John Manley, Stephen Grenter and Fiona Gale
Published by (the now defunct) Clwyd County Council in 1991 but still very informative.
My last recommendation is anything by Frances Lynch. The godmother of North Wales archaeology is a brilliant communicator.
These are my personal favourites. I'm sure that fellow Portallers can suggest many others.

This covers an area a bit further north but worth posting in this thread
Discovering a Welsh Landscape: Archaeology in the Clwydian Range
Part of the Landscapes of Britain series. In the far north-east corner of Wales, a line of hills looks east across the plain into England, guarding the way towards Snowdonia. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Clwydian Range has a very rich archaeology. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of this landscape: a history of Wales in microcosm. At the northern end of the Welsh March, the Clwydian Range is a crossroads, a place where outside influences have always been profound. The book consequently places the Range's archaeology in the context of the broader themes in Welsh and British history. Througout, the photographs capture the spirit of Hopkins' original "landscape plotted and pieced."

Hi again
pricings are roughly from http://www.abebooks.co.uk
Grimes Prehistory of Wales - gives general introduction to all prehistoric sites it is old (1951) but has extensive catalogue of what has been found circa £10
George Nash The Architecture of Death - This is a new find to me when I was doing a little research before my trip it has a good grouping of the chambered tombs broken down into regions. circa £15.00 only down side is for a new book it could have done with colour pictures but I would still recommend this.
Another is Wheeler's Prehistoric and Roman Wales - again it is old but again has good drawings and pictures of artefacts. Circa £14
It depends on your period of interest in prehistory I guess or is it a general interest?

As a Brecnoc lad myself Sem, I wouldn't mind a gander. You could bring it down when you visit and I could post it back once read maybe.

Wow!!! Sounds good. Let Mike have a gander first - and then if no-one else wants it, how would you fancy adding it to my huge megalithic library (about 5000 books & 2000 journals). It would live in its midst for many many years and be well looked after!
I do have quite a few books which I've got extra copies of. If there's owt you'd like, lemme know. PM me with a list of any book 'wants' you may have and I'll see what I can do.

Just a thought to those of us who like books - there's a damn good website called 'Green Metropolis' where all the books there (and there are thousands) cost just £3.75 each. There's quite a lot of decent history works listed, which might be of interest to MegPortal folk. You can also post any books of your own to sell totally free of charge and get 3-quid for every one sold, straight into your account.
Check it at - http://www.greenmetropolis.com
There's also eBid, TazBar, QXL, CQout and other auction sites, aswell as eBay, where you can also find cheap archaeo-books from time to time.

Christopher Holter - "Wales: An Archaeological Guide".

I had luck to buy this book when I was visiting Welsh archaeological sites 2 years ago, and I really recommend it. Good choice of various archaeological sites all over Wales.

Logaston press do some regional guides by county's. they are written by George Children and George Nash( is there something about Georges and archaeology, probably genetic)
they are quite good for lots of sites ,with directions, a generally good description and some opinions on each sites possible origins. lots of photo's and diagrams. good allround guides without too much detail.
