Hi everyone
Just wondering if there is anyone based in St David's, Pembrokeshire or close by, who I could consult/link up with for an intended visit there in early summer? I'm particularly interested in the appropriation of ancient sites by Christianity, e.g St Non's chapel, wells etc, but more generally, any ancient sites in the area.
Thanks
Andy

Just come back from this area, good book to buy is Dillwyn Miles - Pembrokeshire Coast, sounds dull I know, but he lists all the scheduled monuments -theres about 29 crosses/inscribed stones, plus ecc.sites. You can buy it from the bookshop opposite the cathedral of St.David, also N.P.Figgis,- Prehistoric Pembs. Brawdy church for instance which is on this site, is probably difficult to get to, its on M.O.D. property with police at the gate!
There's St.Justinian ruined chapel overlooking the sea in someones garden, not sure of the date, but he has the usual headless saint myth.

There are loads of chambers (dolmens) in the area. Whilst you are there also check out the idea that St David was a Norman religious con. At the time that the Normans were trying to overcome Celtic Christianity, St David suddenly appears as the major saint. His contempories Illtyd ,Teilo and Dyfrig had been written about centuries previous to this but curiously there is no mention of St Dai.
He appears to be a very minor saint who's cause was taken up by William the Bastard in order to impose what later became Catholocism on the existing Celtic Church.

You should contact Vicky, who is a moderator here & is also an official guide to Pembs on this site.
Also peruse Francis Jones's Holy Wells of Wales. The one I came accross was published in1954, but you might find it in a public library, especially in Wales. There was a copy in Haverfordwest PL 20 yrs ago !!! Much interesting stuff in it.
Enjoy Pembs, I know you will. My Dad had a sheepfarm on the Preselys, long ago.
