Constable painted Stonehenge as a jumble of mostly prostrate stones. I've also got a photo somewhere of workmen with a steam crane assembling it only 100 years ago. How much is history, and how much is conjecture?

Known interventions as follows (from Burl - The Stonehenge People 1987);

1620 - Duke of Buckingham excavation.
1723 - Lord Pembroke & William Stukeley excavation. Rabbits introduced by Thomas Hayward, the then owner.
1771 - Rabbit burrows under Slaugter Stone.
1798, 1802 & 1810 - William Cunnington excavations.
c. 1839 - Captain Beamish excavation.
1901 - Stone 56 straightened & set in concrete.
1919-26 - William Hawley excavations, SE half of entire site stripped to bedrock.
1919-20 - Stones 1,2,6,7,29 & 30 Straightened & set in concrete.
1950 - Atkinson, Piggott & Stone excavation.
1953-58 - further excavations.
1957 - Trilithon 57-58 re-erected (fell on Jan.3 1797).
1959 - Stones 4,5 & 60 straightened & set in concrete.
1963-64 - Stone 23 fell & was re-erected.
1978 - Atkinson & Evans excavation.
1979-80 - Pitts excavation.

There has been relatively little reconstruction, but the many excavations have resulted in a much tidier site.
